Energy from fossil fuels is the primary cause of global warming. When these fuels are burned conventionally, carbon dioxide is released into Earth’s atmosphere. Increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse” gases increase global temperatures by trapping heat. The chart shows how rapidly carbon dioxide concentrations are increasing.
For information on fossil and non-fossil energy resources, go to the Energy Technology section. |

Global temperatures are rising due to the increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and other GHGs. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports “very high confidence” that human activities are responsible to the observed global warming.
For information on the IPCC and global warming, go to the Environment section.

California enacted a law in 2006, AB 32, which establishes a goal of reducing GHG emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020. The chart shows how California’s GHG emissions must change to meet the state’s goals.
For information on implementation of AB 32 by California agencies go to the Policy Matters section. |
